World of Warcraft was the world's most popular MMORPG by player count of nearly 10 million in 2009.[5][6] The game had a total of over a hundred million registered accounts by 2014.[7] By 2017, the game had grossed over $9.23 billion in revenue, making it one of the highest-grossing video game franchises of all time. At BlizzCon 2017, a vanilla version of the game titled World of Warcraft Classic was announced, which planned to provide a way to experience the base game before any of its expansions launched. It went live at 3pm PDT[b] on August 26, 2019.[8][9]

As characters become more developed, they gain various talents and skills, requiring the player to further define the abilities of that character.[15] Characters can choose two primary professions that can focus on producing items, such as tailoring, blacksmithing or jewelcrafting or on gathering from resource nodes, such as skinning or mining. Characters can learn all four secondary skills: archeology, cooking, fishing and first aid.[16][17] Characters may form and join guilds, allowing characters within the guild access to the guild's chat channel, the guild name and optionally allowing other features, including a guild tabard, guild bank, guild repairs, and dues.[18]


World of Warcraft was the best-selling PC game of 2005 and 2006.[96] In the United States, it sold 1.4 million copies ($68.1 million) by August 2006. It was the country's third best-selling computer game between January 2000 and August 2006.[97] On January 22, 2008, World of Warcraft had more than 10 million subscribers worldwide, with more than 2 million subscribers in Europe, more than 2.5 million in North America, and about 5.5 million in Asia.[98] At its peak in October 2010 the game had 12 million subscribers.[99] As of November 2014 the game has over 10 million active subscribers.[100] On January 28, 2014 Blizzard announced that 100 million accounts have been created for the game.[101] On May 7, 2015, it was announced that there were 7.1 million active subscriptions.[102][103][104][105] At the end of June 2015, subscriptions dropped down to 5.6 million, lowest since 2005.[106] By the end of September, subscribers were at 5.5 million.[107]
El clan Lobo Gélido se reúne con los humanos liderados por Llane y Anduin, pero son emboscados por Puño Negro creyendo que es una trampa. Han pasado cinco años desde los eventos narrados en Warcraft 3. La Alianza y la Nueva Horda viven en un estado de guerra fría, y mantienen una frágil y quebradiza paz, mientras reconstruyen sus reinos y tratan de recuperar su prosperidad. En Ventormenta, el rey Varian Wrynn ha desaparecido en circunstancias misteriosas mientras viajaba en misión diplomática a la isla de Theramore, por lo que en su ausencia, es nombrado rey su hijo Anduin Wrynn, todavía un niño, asumiendo la regencia lord Bolvar Fordragon y la misteriosa lady Katrana Prestor.
